As a popular genre of book, novels are beloved by many people. A good novel not only requires a captivating storyline and skilled binding techniques, but also a visually striking cover design to capture readers' attention at first glance. So, how can we create a cover with visual impact? For example, we can incorporate various techniques like foil stamping, embossing, UV printing, and more on the cover. Additionally, there is another technique to consider – edge treatment.

Book edge treatment can generally be categorized into four types:

Edge color spraying, suitable for various novels.

Edge gilding, suitable for religious and scholarly books.

Printing patterns on the book edge, ideal for different novels.

Edge spot spraying, suitable for religious and scholarly books.

Next, we will delve into the practices, pros and cons, as well as cost considerations of these various techniques. Your feedback and corrections are welcomed.

Firstly, edge color spraying is a common treatment method for novels, as shown in figures 1 and 2. This technique involves selecting Pantone colors based on customer preferences, adjusting ink, and then uniformly spraying it onto the three sides of the book. It is important for the color spraying to be even, and the book should be clean and tidy before the spraying process. The cost of this technique is not exorbitant, but there is a risk of color fading if the ink concentration is too high.

Secondly, Edge Gilding, it is suitable for various religious texts, religious books, novels, and more, as shown in figures 3 and 4. This method of edge treatment is quite common. We install the selected gilding color specified by the customer and, after smoothing and polishing the book edges, we use a gilding machine to press the gilding onto the three edges of the book. It is important to use high-quality gilding paper to ensure successful gilding; for books with heavy ink, interleaf paper should be added between the endpaper and cover to prevent sticking. Although the cost is relatively high, the result is very effective.

Thirdly, printing patterns on the book edge is suitable for various novels, as shown in figures 5 and 6. As the name suggests, this involves printing patterns on the three edges of the book. This method uses a digital printer to print the patterns on the book edge, requiring preparatory files processing, such as bleeding and adjusting curves, to enhance the brightness of the colors. This approach is currently popular, but it is important to note that color discrepancies may occur post-printing due to file format issues and viewing angles. Printing costs are lower compared to the second method, making it a recommended option.

Fourthly, edge speckling(edge painting dots) is suitable for various religious texts, religious books, as depicted in figure 7. This is the final method of book edge treatment, and the process is similar to the first method. It involves pre-mixing ink according to the Pantone color specifications, then applying it onto the book edges using a sponge or special brush by experienced personnel. This method has the lowest cost but is typically only suitable for Arabic religious books.
